GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR LISTSERV USE

For information on managing your LISTSERV subscriptions, please see Listserv FAQ or read on….

If you register a listserv password at http://www.listserv.uga.edu/, you can use it to manage all your lists at one time by clicking on the “Browse, Subscribe, Post, Search …” link (http://www.listserv.uga.edu/archives/).  You can subscribe by typing the list name into the “List Name” text box via the “Browse, Subscribe, Post, Search” option, and clicking “Join or leave the list.”  You can also change your settings (i.e., digest, nomail) or check the list archives on this page.

SENDING E-MAIL COMMANDS TO LISTSERV

Insert the name of the specific list where the instructions say [listname].  (The listnames for Staff Council’s lists are ugasc, ugastaff, and uga-forsale, but many others are available and these instructions apply to all.)  Please note the difference between sending e-mail commands to the listserver (listserv@listserv.uga.edu) and posting e-mail messages to a list ([listname]@listserv.uga.edu).  The listserver does not read the subject line.  E-mails to a list should always have an accurate subject line because your message goes to all subscribers.

TO SUBSCRIBE

Send an email message to listserv@listserv.uga.edu.  In the body of the message, type (without the quote marks) “sub [listname] YourFirstName YourLastName.”

Example: sub ugastaff John Doe

Delete or disable your signature before sending.

You will receive a confirmation notice which you should keep for future reference.

TO UNSUBSCRIBE
Send email to listserv@listserv.uga.edu. In the body of the message, type “signoff [listname].”
Example: signoff ugastaff
Delete or disable your signature before sending.

POSTING MESSAGES

TO SEND MAIL
Send to the list address ([listname]@listserv.uga.edu).
Examples:  ugastaff@listserv.uga.edu, uga-forsale@listserv.uga.edu
Please note that you can only send mail to the list from the ID under which you are subscribed, although you can read mail from any ID using autoforwarding. Remember -E-mails to a list should always have an accurate subject line because your message goes to all subscribers.

TO CONTACT A LIST ADMINISTRATOR
If you are having problems subscribing or unsubscribing, or if you wish to ask a question, send an e-mail to [listname]-request@listserv.uga.edu.
Example: ugastaff-request@listserv.uga.edu

MESSAGE FORMATS AVAILABLE

SUBSCRIPTION FORMAT
The default format is the “nodigest” setting, which means individual messages are sent to you as they are posted to the list.  If you would prefer to get all individual messages at one time, you can change your format to “digest.”

DAILY DIGEST FORMAT
This setting enables you to receive all the individual postings for the day in one e-mail message the next morning.  This can be very useful for minimizing your e-mail messages when you go on vacation.  To change your setting, send an e-mail to listserv@listserv.uga.edu.  In the body of the message type:  set [listname] digest.
Example: set ugastaff digest
(To change back to the regular setting, send an e-mail to listserv@listserv.uga.edu with this in the body:  set [listname] nodigest.)

It is also possible to filter e-mail from a list to individual folders to help manage your Inbox.  More information is available at UGAMail/Webmail: Account Management Options here.

GOING ON VACATION?

Set your listserv subscription so you won’t have a ton of stuff in your inbox when you return.  Send a SET command to listserv@listserv.uga.edu and put the appropriate listname in the spot indicated, such as SET UGA-FORSALE NO MAIL or SET UGASTAFF MAIL.

SET [listname] NOMAIL stops incoming mail from specified list

SET [listname] MAIL resumes mail from the list
And if you are subscribed to several lists, simply do SET * NOMAIL
