President’s Report:
I’m assuming everyone has seen the agenda that has the Chancellor’s comments about merit based raises. I just wanted to pass that info on to you so you could pass it along to your units.
Have you all been to the Every Drop Counts website? If you have any suggestions or if you feel like there are leaky toilets or something in your building, please let us know.
I sent out a call for a volunteer for the parking committee. It is a busy committee, but if you want to volunteer, please do so.
There were some things people had asked about at the last meeting and the people I asked to look into that are not here today. I will ask them to address this in Dec.
I’m hoping I can get someone here about strategic planning at the December meeting.
Do we have any committee reports?
A – Nothing
Q – What is the deadline for the Voice?
A – If you have anything to contribute, please let us know! At this
point, we don’t have anything, so if you have anything to share with
the community, please send us something.
New Business:
Police chief Jimmy Williamson addressed the group regarding concerns over
weapons being advertised on the UGA For Sale listserv. Currently there
is no law prohibiting the advertisement of guns for sale on the listserv. The
UGA and state policy simply prohibits the exchange of these items on the UGA
campus. A weapon on campus is a felony. Unfortunately, what will probably
happen is someone will advertise a gun for sale and then make the exchange
on UGA property in direct violation of state law and face a felony charge if
arrested. The administrators of the listserv do have the right to limit
what can be sold over the listserv; it is perfectly allowable for you to limit
it to whatever you want to.
Q – Could we tell those people wishing to post a gun for sale to create
their own listserv?
A – It would be better to direct them to an off campus listserv for that
purpose.
Q – What if we just say no and we don’t have to give them a reason?
Q – Now we have to look at what we consider weapons. A set of steak knives?
A – Well we typically look at them as household items. If that person
had one on them when they got in a conflict then yes it would be considered
a weapon. So, anything that is a house hold item would be fine.
Q – I thought it was a 2” pocket knife.
A – I’ll need to go back and look; there are 3 different laws that
deal with it. If it’s in that PDF file then it’s correct.
If you go to our website we have a section on what we consider weapons according
to state law.
Q – Is there a communications officer that I can send someone to if they
have questions.
A – Send them to me. Tell them to call me.
A – You have the right to bring a weapon to campus if it’s kept
in a locked container in your car. i.e. a locked glove box. It can not ever
leave the locked container or you would be in violation of the law.
Ok, what is your general feeling on this? Do you agree with prohibiting the
sale of weapons through the listserv?
Just say it can’t be sold and direct them to the policy.
Ok, go ahead and post it and move forward.
